Social Action Committee Project

As a continuation of the spirit encountered at the recent Reform Jewish Biennial Celebration, the Temple Beth Hillel Social Action Committee met to select a project which would have a positive impact on the community. The one chosen, called "Free-zer For All", involves preparing soup and storing it in containers in the Temple freezer, where it will be available for members of our community.

The soup can be taken free of charge by individuals in need, free of charge by anyone bringing the soup to individuals in need, or for a small donation by anyone who would just like to enjoy the soup. All donations will be used to sustain Project Free-zer For All.

If any person wants to help with Project Free-Zer For All, please contact Social Action Chairperson Ana Pearl

Social Action Committee

VP: Ana Pearl
Our Mission: The Social Action Committee of Temple Beth Hillel is charged with the responsibility of relating the ethical and spiritual principals of Judaism as expressed in the teachings of the Torah, of the prophets, of the sages, and of the rabbis of Israel to the problems of the world and of translating into moral and ethical deeds and actions the Judaism we profess. Through study and discussion, the committee shall help to educate and activate the congregation concerning the pressing problems and issues of the time, in accord with the basic tenets of Judaism.

Temple Beth Hillel's Social Action/Justice committee is alive and working.

About 10% of our Temple's family units are involved in one kind or another of social action/justice around town and around the World. Some of the projects that have been undertaken in 2006 have been: Food Share, Crop Walk 2006, the High Holiday food drive, gleaning of local farm fields, "adopting" a Temple in Tula Russia, feeding children in the Jewish compounds in Addis Ababa & Gondar Provinces in Ethiopia and a number of letter writing campaigns on behalf of several pressing social issues.

All members of our Temple family are invited to propose projects and to get involved in Social Action/Justice projects.

Israel Bonds

In 1951, Development Corporation for Israel- DCI (better known as "Israel Bonds") was founded by David Ben-Gurion to unite Diaspora Jewry and Israel in an economic partnership to help build the reborn Jewish nation. He could not have possibly conceived the magnitude and success of this enterprise. That partnership has helped fuel virtually every sector of Israel’s economy, transforming Israel into an industrial leader that boasts agricultural independence, cutting-edge technological development, state of the art medical and scientific institutions, a modern infrastructure, and a highly skilled and educated workforce.

As Israel faces the future with the hoped-for promise of peace and security, it seeks to attract new economic links and explore new markets for continued growth. Israel is an ongoing success story which all can share through Israel Bonds.

Social Action News

3rd Shabbat Food Drive
To help feed our hungry neighbors in the greater Hartford community, the Social Action Committee is continuing the food drive throughout the year. Please support this effort by bringing a nonperishable food item when you come to shul on the third Shabbat of the month or any time you visit the synagogue. There will be a basket marked FoodShare in the coatroom. Donations will be made to FoodShare and the Kosher Food Pantry. In this way we can maintain our commitment to fight hunger in our community.

Most needed food items include:
High protein foods-peanut butter, tuna fish, chunky soups, beans, canned stew, chile.
Canned fruit and vegetables
Dry cereal and oatmeal
Rice, pasta, macaroni and cheese
Paper goods, personal hygiene items, feminine hygiene supplies

Please be sure all items have not exceeded the expiration date, are in the original packaging and have not been opened.

As always, if you wish to make a monetary donation, write a check to the Social Action Committee, (memo: FoodShare) and send it to the Synagogue or place it in the small tzadakah box near the Synagogue door.

Tula Committee

Chair: Open
Tula is 2 hours South of Moscow and the Sister temple we take care of is Hatikva, consisting of mostly single parents, and the elderly population. It is a reform congregation that has only been able to openly celebrate it's Judaism since 2002.Our committee is dedicated to help this temple both monetarily and with Judaiac items and also to establish friendships along the way. Anyone is welcome to join this committee--we look forward to all that would like to help.

Ariel Sharon Letter

In 2002, over 100 students and adults of Temple Beth Hillel signed three 100-foot scrolls composed of poems, drawings and letters of peace and friendship.

One scroll was sent to President George W. Bush, one to the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and one to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

We were fortunate enought to receive a reply from a staff member of Prime Minister Sharon.
